Fly Tying Basics - February 2027

This Fly Tying Basics Class will take place Mondays February 2/1, 2/8, 2/15 and 2/22.

Our Fly Tying Basics Class is intended to be an introduction to fly tying for those with little to no experience.  We will cover essential fly tying materials, tools, and material handling skills.  We aim to give you the confidence and skills necessary to whip up a few dozen flies that you will actually fish! Along the way, we hope to inspire a passion to create your own flies and teach you a little something about how we approach flies and fly fishing.  Throughout the class, we will tie several flies proven to work in our home waters around Missoula: The Blackfoot, Bitterroot, Clark Fork, and Rock Creek.

All materials and tools will be provided.  You are welcome to bring your own vise and tools if you have them.  The class is capped at 8 participants to allow for individualized instruction.

Dates: Mondays 2/1, 2/8, 2/15 and 2/22

Duration: 2 hours per session / 8 hours total

Hours: 5:30pm-7:30pm

Our fly tying instructor, Christian, has been only using his own hand tied nymphs, dries, and streamers for 4 years. Christian was born and raised fly fishing in Helena, Montana. After Christian graduated high school, he got his elementary education degree at University of Montana. After teaching 4th grade for a couple of years in Missoula, he now works full time at Blackfoot River Outfitters.
