5-Day Smith River Adventure

Float, fly fish, camp, and relax for 4 nights and 5 days in Montana’s most coveted river canyon.

The Smith River winds through central Montana’s Belt Mountains, carving a breathtaking 63-mile canyon before merging with the Missouri River. Our five-day/four-night fly-fishing adventures take place in this stunning, remote corridor where roads and highways vanish, leaving only the river and the rhythm of nature.

Highly Exclusive & Protected

The Smith River is a crown jewel of the American West, and the State of Montana carefully preserves its pristine wilderness by strictly limiting use. This is a highly coveted experience; last year alone, over 8,100 hopeful applicants vied for a handful of private permits.

Blackfoot River Outfitters is one of only six licensed outfitters granted the privilege of a Smith River permit. We are limited to just two launches per year, making this one of the most exclusive guided opportunities in fly fishing. Because of these strict conservation efforts, a trip down the Smith is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Your Journey Begins

The adventure starts in Missoula or Helena, where we transport you to White Sulphur Springs for a restful night at the Edith Hotel and a hearty meal at the legendary Mint Bar. After a home-cooked breakfast the following morning, we head to Camp Baker to launch into the canyon.

Riverside Luxury

Once on the water, you are free to float and fish at your own pace, flanked by towering limestone cliffs and deep evergreen ridges. While you focus on the trout, our professional gear crew rows ahead to handle the heavy lifting. You’ll arrive at camp to find a fully realized wilderness oasis: warm water for washing up, fresh hors d'oeuvres, and a flickering campfire waiting for you.

World-Class Backcountry Dining

Dinner is the centerpiece of the evening, served family-style under the Big Sky. Our menus are a highlight for many guests, featuring gourmet fare such as crab-stuffed salmon, cheese ravioli, and—when available—grilled wild Montana elk steaks. Every meal is complemented by fresh salads, selected wines, and a delectable Dutch oven dessert to cap off the day.

What’s Not Included?

Montana fishing license, waders (we can arrange rentals), transportation to and from Missoula, and gratuities.

Special Use Permit

All Smith River Trips are performed under a Special Use Permit issued by the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest. Blackfoot River Outfitters is an Equal Opportunity Provider.
