Float, fly fish, camp, and relax for 4 nights and 5 days in Montana’s most coveted river canyon.
The Smith River winds through central Montana’s Belt Mountains, carving a 63-mile canyon before merging with the Missouri River. Our five-day/four-night Smith River fly-fishing adventures take place in this stunning, remote canyon, where you’ll find no roads or highways, just the river and nature.
The Smith River is unique in Montana, with all recreational floating regulated by a state permit system. Only nine trips launch per day, making it a highly coveted experience. Last year, over 8,100 applications were submitted for private permits, reflecting the river’s secluded beauty, wilderness appeal, and excellent trout fishing.
Our adventures begin in Missoula or Helena, where we transport clients to White Sulfur Springs for a night at the Edith Hotel, following a hearty meal at the Mint Bar. After a home-cooked breakfast, we head to Camp Baker to start the river journey.
Once on the river, anglers float and fish at their own pace, surrounded by towering cliffs and evergreen ridges. Meanwhile, our gear crew rows ahead to set up camp, ensuring a welcoming site with warm water, hors d’oeuvres, and a flickering campfire when you arrive.
Dinner, served family-style, is often a trip highlight, featuring dishes like crab-stuffed salmon, cheese ravioli, and, when available, grilled wild Montana elk steaks, complemented by fresh salads, selected wines, and a delectable Dutch oven dessert.
