Tip of the Week Flows on Rock Creek have dropped and have flattened out and fishing is very good. Salmonflies are the ticket on the Creek right now. Fishing side channels, structure, and slower moving water will be where the fish are at. Have a few different Salmonfly patterns in your box to throw!
*There are a few diversions on Rock if you are floating. Mile Marker 27 there is a tree down and then between Upper Fire Ring and the Microburst there is a new one. FLOAT CAUTIOUSLY!*
7 Day Outlook Prepare for a cold and wet weekend up the canyon. Highs will linger in the 40s and 50s with a chance of rain Sunday. Temperatures look to stay the same throughout the week with chances of rain here and there.
Best Techniques The big bugs have arrived! With Salmonflies showing up on the river, trout are looking for large meals. Because of the chilly weekend rain, a deep nymphing rig will likely be your most consistent producer. Use a heavy TJ Hooker, a Sili-Leg Stone with a Tungsten Bead, or a classic Pat's Rubber Legs. Alternatively, a heavy dry-dropper rig utilizing a Juicy Stone, Henry’s Fork Salmonfly, or Fool's Gold Salmonfly will get results. Streamers will also move big fish in the extra current. Keep your dry fly placements pinned close to willow lines and heavy boulder pockets. With the cool and rainy weather there is a possibility of Green Drakes as well.

MSO (Missoula International Airport)
9' 3X or 4X for single dry or nymph rigs. 7.5' 3X for dry-dropper rigs. We only go down to 5X when fishing tiny dries to picky fish. No need for 6X here.
3X-5X will cover almost all of your fishing applications. Don't use less than 2X for streamers.
A 9' 5WT is still going to be your do-it-all rod here, especially when nymphing or dry-dropper fishing, but we like to size down to a 8'6" 4WT for fishing single dires. A 6WT with a floating line, or light sink tip is all you need for fishing streamers.
Scientific Anglers Amplitude MPX
A 3ips sink tip is all you need for Rock Creek, unless you are fishing during runoff- then go heavier. We frequently fish streamers on floating lines here.
