Why Belize and why Turneffe Flats?
The answers are simple – best and best. Traveling to Belize couldn’t be easier with multiple flights by 4 major American airline companies regularly to Belize City. Belize is an english speaking country full of delightful people who appreciate traveling United States citizens. Transfers to and from the mainland are safe and efficient all based with in minutes of the airport. And, Turneffe Flats is recognized world wide by the most distinctive travel experts as the premiere destination for saltwater flats fly fishing and marine eco-tourism. Their guides are expert full time salt water captains and the staff dedicated and service driven. This destination is sure to impress both the most ardent angler and the non-angling companion at once.
The Flats Fishing –
Saltwater fly fishing diversity is a critical distinguishing feature here. Located on the remote and prolific Turneffe Atoll – Turneffe Flats tops the list of locations anglers have a legitimate opportunity to catch the saltwater grand slam of bonefish, tarpon and permit on a fly, all in the same day. As if a potential grand slam wasn’t enough, the atoll is teaming with snook, jacks, triggerfish, mutton and cubera snapper, small sharks and barracuda. The Turneffe Atoll is the largest most biologically diverse coral atoll in the Western Hemisphere and affords over 250 miles of pristine flats, lagoons, creeks and channels. You won’t be bored with fishing the same water for the week. So, the fishing is fantastic, what about the accommodations?
The Accommodations and Dining –
Ocean and garden side cabanas and villas are air conditioned and a stones throw from the home flat and great wade angling. Rooms are warmly appointed offering stunning views and fresh breeze off the coral breakers. Dinners and breakfasts are served in the main lodge and lunches are on the water with your guide. The sitting area off the main dinning room is perfect for reliving the the day’s adventures with an ice cold Belikin- but we’ll be doing that poolside on the deck.
Alternative Activities –
If you want to break away from fishing for a day Turneffe Flats offers Eco-Adventures. Choose from snorkeling among reef fish, lobsters, turtles, and even manatees, going birding to over 60 different species, kayaking, or take an educational walking tour with T-Flats own flora, fauna and naturalist guide, Able (he is an knowledgable and enthusiastic teacher).
On Personal Note –
Our February 2018 trip was fantastic! As outfitters, we are always evaluating other operations from a business perspective, and trust us TFlats is a well oiled machine. Starting with being met immediately out of customs with a transfer driver to getting shuttled back to the airport following our trip logistics were flawless. Once on the Atoll, from the house cleaning team to the guide line up the Turneffe staff was top notch, the accommodations exceptionally inviting, and the camaraderie each morning and evening delightful. The bonefish fishing was as good as we’ve seen anywhere. We may have seen that many bonefish in the Bahamas but certainly have never seen so many tailing in shallow water. As most of our trip consisted of anglers new to flats fishing, they capitalized on the abundance of feeding bonefish and no one was left wanting. Terri and I were focused on permit. They were there, plenty of them, every day and in surprisingly shallow water. We botched some casts, put plenty more close to where you’re supposed to and even made a few terrific shots on target, on time. But in the end they were particularly challenging and now we are even more determined to bring a few to hand on our next trip. Though none of us truly focused on catching snook (couple caught) and tarpon there were a few sneaking around the mangrove edges for those willing to leave heaps of bonefish to find them. For the moments we spent casting to other alternate species – snapper, jacks, cuda – in and around the reef and deep cuts we were quickly rewarded. We truly anticipate spending more time chasing all of them on this next trip. We can’t say enough about this destination and relish the idea that we are heading up another trip this February. Hopefully you can share the experience with us.
